Moletai
If you look at the map of Lithuania, Moletai is located in Eastern Lithuania 60 km away from Vilnius, the country's capital, near the highway Vilnius-Utena.It is the administrative centre of the district of Moletai, being a part of the Utena County according to the administrative-territorial division (in total 10 counties in Lithuania).
The population of the district is 25 thousand. 7 thousand inhabitants live in the town and 18 thousand in the country. 86% being Lithuanians, 10% - Poles, 3% - Russians, 1% - representatives of other nationalities. 33% of the population is engaged in agriculture and forestry, 8% - industries and energy sector, 13% - construction, 46% - education, social and other services. Small and medium size enterprises prevail, the total number of operating enterprises is 350. In the district the soil is not fertile, the industry sector is minor, and thus the prioritised development tendencies are recreation enabling to develop ecological farming,leisure and tourism business.

The most valuable wealth of the district is clean nature as there no industrial polluters. 1/4 of the territory is covered with woods where 227 lakes lie.The longest lake of Lithuania Asveja (30 km), the Siesartis and Virinta rivers are located in the district of Moletai. A part of the district's territory is included in the Asveja and Labanoras Regional Parks.

Holiday-makers and tourists like this hilly area with forests and lakes. About 150 thousand of holiday-makers and 2 thousand of foreign tourists visit the district annually. Over 40 holiday homes with 2 thousand beds are located in the nicest areas, rural tourism services were initiated, water tourism routs are under development.The increasing number of holiday makers and tourists encourages Lithuanian and foreign businessmen to show interest and invest into the recreation business. New shopping centres, numerous retail shops and a network of restaurants and bars are under development. The Company UAB STRENKO established by the Dutch is building a recreation settlement including 100 houses with developed infrastructure. A sports aviation club, airport for sport planes operate near Moletai.

Moletai, mentioned in historical sources 615 years ago, was established in a neighbourhood of lakes, on the banks of the Siesartis River. Smaller towns of the district Balninkai, Dubingiai, Giedraichiai, Inturke, Jonishkis, Suginchiai, Videnishkiai are located in a picturesque landscape too. The Municipal Council established the long-term town and region development plan aims at the development of respective infrastructure, camp sites and hotels.

The rich cultural heritage of Moletai includes 403 archaeological, arts, architecture and historical monuments, 7 museums. The unique Museum of Ethnocosmology, the Fishery Museum and The Glass Museum attract a great number of visitors. The Museum of Moletai District provides information about the history of this town and region, folk art exhibitions are organised there. A sculpture park was established in a picturesque location. A few years ago an international creative plenary for sculptors was organised, and now the visitors may enjoy the art pieces of sculptors from Lithuania, Poland, France and England.

The Leisure Time Centre provides a permanent art gallery exhibiting art pieces of Lithuanian artists. Guests may visit the Observatory and an ancient observatory of celestial bodies, the manors in Arnionys and Alanta, the Monastery in Videniskiai and the ruins of Baltadvaris Castle.

The cultural life in the town is active: the international folk music and dance festival "Ezeru sietuva" is organised every two years, the annual regional children's chorus festival "Vaikystes aitvarai", the children's theatre festival "Kaukas" attract numerous visitors, as well as different events organised in the town or the stand site erected in the forest nearby.

Moletai is a member of the Union of the Baltic cities. Based on the agreements on cultural and educational co-operation, the Municipality of Moletai and the municipalities of Ludza (Latvia) and Makov (Poland) exchange their delegation visits annually. The Moletai Gymnasium maintains close relations with the Barn Lyceum in Holland. The Alanta Technology and Business School co-operates with agriculture schools of Stange in Norway, Try in Denmark and the Building School in Steinhoff (Germany). Moletai seeks for new co-operation relationship, experience of other countries and Lithuanian regions, partners and participation in joint projects in the areas of culture, science, education, NGO activities, recreation and tourism development.
