The icon of Saint George sitting on the horse and stabbing the dragon is shown in the Emblem of Marijampolė. The King of Poland and Lithuania gave this Emblem to Marijampole city in 1792.Marijampole is the largest city in the region of Suvalkija. It has very interesting and very rich history. The city was beginning to find itself along the village of Pašešupys. In the source books it was mentioned in 1667 for the first time.The storms of history hit this city as well.

During the time of Soviet occupancy, the city was renamed into Kapsukas. Such name has been chosen because of Vincas Kapsukas, who was the politician in the communist party.A lot of merited persons were born in this region. The territory of Marijampole Municipality consists of the city of Marijampole and six sub districts: Gudeliai, Igliauka, Liudvinavas, Marijampolė, Sasnava and Šunskai. The municipality boarders with the municipalities of Kalvarija, Prienai and Alytus.Marijampolė has signed the contract of collaboration with Finland, Germany, Polant, Denmark and Russia.
