Elektrenai
Elektrėnai Municipality was established on 19 March 2000 upon execution of reform of the country territory administrative units. At the moment of establishment the new municipality was almost 55 thousand hectares in area; the population was about 32 thousand. After incorporation of the cadastre territory of Liutonys village in Kaišiadorys district in 2002 and having taken a census of the population, it was established that the municipality area is 50,9 thousand hectares (0,8 per cent of the total area of Lithuania), the population is 28,9 thousand (0,4 per cent of the total population of Lithuania).
There are 2 tows in the municipality: Elektrėnai and Vievis, a small town Semeliškės and 276 villages.
Elektrėnai municipality is situated in the southeast of Lithuania in Vilnius region. Geographical position of the municipality territory is very good and the communication is very convenient (the territory is crossed by the highway Vilnius – Klaipėda and by the very important railway).
The municipality center ElektrÄ—nai, established in 1961 when the power plant was started to build in the midway between Vilnius and Kaunas. Neighborhood of the largest Lithuanian towns prompts small business, development of the suburban economy, beautiful landscapes, abundance of archaeological and cultural monuments educational tourism.
ElektrÄ—nai town is situated on a halfway of the highway Vilnius-Kaunas. The town began to grow up after the resolution to construct Thermal Power Plant on StrÄ—va River in 1960. The new formed water basin joined 8 lakes. At present the Electric Power station uses only 3 per cent its power. It is the most important reserve of Ignalina Nuclear Power plant.
Elektrenai is situated on the bank of the ElektrÄ—nai Lake with many islands and bays which is the most favourite place of recreation of residents and guests. They can sail by sailboats, water-bicycles as well as go in various water sports.
Well equipped Ice Palace attracts many visitors. People of Elektrėnai like to go skating and playing hockey. Many famous Lithuanian hockey – players started their career in this palace.
Elektrėnai town is situated on a halfway of the highway Vilnius-Kaunas. Vilnius – capital of Lithuania, 49 km from Elektrėnai, Kaunas - the second largest town in Lithuania, 51 km from Elektrėnai, used to be a temporary capital and the major city of Lithuania from 1919 to 1939
Trakai - a small town that lies 20 km from ElektrÄ—nai. The historical part of the town is situated on a picturesque peninsula in the middle of three adjoining lakes. Most beautiful is the 15th century gothic castle that now houses a museum. Trakai is also known as the historical the 14th century capital of Lithuania.

Kernavė – the first capital of Lithuania dating back to the 13th century located 40 km from Vilnius. The Archeological Reserve with five mounds and Pajauta Valley cover almost 200 hectares. According to the archeologists the first inhabitants settled there in 8000 BC. Included into the UNESCO World Heritage List.
